Consecutive interpretation is the most common form of oral interpretation. With consecutive interpreting, your Chicago interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker completes a sentence or phrase. Simultaneous interpretation is a concurrent approach to interpreting. The interpreter translates what the source-language speaker is saying in real-time, creating a level of overlap. In many cases, this is done with a soundproof booth with the interpreter using a headset while remaining in full view of the speaker. It’s more commonly used in larger group settings where pauses aren’t optimal, such as conferences, public events, speeches, and legal proceedings.

Conference interpretation typically involves more than one interpreter, interpreting either consecutively or simultaneously, as well as specialized technical equipment.
